Tired of living on the edge (of everything you want)? Try this

Lynn O'DowdGoGaGa News

“Maybe it’s time to let the old ways die. It takes a lot to change, it takes a lot to try. Maybe it’s time to let the old ways die.” – Jack, in A Star is Born, as played by Bradley Cooper

The film A Star is Born opened this October. From the start, it’s clear that if the leading character, Ally (played by Lady Gaga), doesn’t step out onto the biggest stage of her life, she will miss the chance to seize her full potential and live the life of her dreams.

Ally is on the ledge, at the edge of what she most wants. But stepping onto that stage is a huge step, way beyond her comfort zone; a quantum leap away from the safety she’s used to.

When you take a big step and let go of the old to make room for the new, you know deep down that your life will never be the same. That can be scary!

The alternative, however, could be even scarier: Regret over what you missed, or opportunities you passed up. Living a life on the edge, without ever taking that leap of faith in the direction of your dreams.

Staying within your comfort zone, however, will keep you at your current level of progress. Ask yourself: Can I live with the regret of never giving my dream a try, even if I might fail?

I couldn’t. When I stepped back out on stage, joining a rock band after not singing a note for 35 years, I explained my decision to my mentor, “I either needed to step off the ledge or jump. I was tired of living on the edge.“

Stepping outside your comfort zone and into your next level of success is often not about landing the “perfect” opportunity, or getting over the fear; it’s about your willingness to take a chance and put yourself out there, whether you feel ready or not!

Sometimes the hardest part of life is getting out of your own way and having the courage—and persistence—to try something new. It’s one thing to be inspired by your dreams and aspirations to act; it’s another thing entirely to do the work necessary to achieve what you desire. That’s why it takes bravery and grit, both.

Are you living on the edge of what you want? Is there something in your life you’d like to do, or do over? What do you secretly desire, personally or professionally?

If you are ready for things in your life to be different, maybe it’s time to let the old ways die. Take a listen:
